The 1990s were full of some of the coolest, wildest fashion styles. From the scrunchies and surf shorts to puka shell necklaces and boat shoes, this decade set a style all its own. We have a look at some of the biggest 1990s fashions.
Fanny packs
You don’t need to travel to rock the fanny pack. You could throw anything into that little pack. These fashionable packs were available in all different colors and styles. Even designers like Karl Lagerfeld got into fanny packs to really boost the cool levels.
Boat shoes
You could look like you’re going to the beach even if you’re not stepping near the water. The coolest boat shoes made you look like a frat kid on a yacht. Sperry was the best brand for legit boat shoes.
Choker necklaces
If you didn’t look like your necklace was choking you, then you weren’t making a fashion statement. You threw out your drop chains and grabbed your choker. They were leather or lace usually. Some of them even looked like plastic tattoos.
Plaid flannel shirts
Grunge was the look for many kids in the 90s. Plaid flannel shirts paired with some carpenter pants were the best look. Kurt Cobain helped the plaid flannel shirt soar in popularity with the rockers. The heartthrobs of the 1990s were also showing off their flannel shirts. Even the “it” Hollywood girls wore their flannels.
Scrunchies
Having a collection of scrunchies was a must-do of the 90s. Scrunchies were offered in all kinds of fabrics, sizes, prints, and patterns. You had to throw them on your ponytail for the perfect look. If you watched “Saved By The Bell,” you know the stars had to have a scrunchie in most of the scenes.
Board shorts
Board shorts were usually worn by surfers, but other kids love to wear them as well. O’Neill and Roxy were at the top of the fashion charts. It didn’t matter if you were near the ocean. Guys wore the longer boardshorts and girls wore the short ones. All of the pockets and zippers made them great to throw everything in your shorts, too.
Baby tees
The baby tee was basically a t-shirt that fit tiny. It showed off your waist and body. Baby tees were about minimalism with high fashion. They often had cool sayings across them. The crop tops of the 2000s had nothing on the baby tees of the 90s.
Timberlands
You don’t need to go to a construction site to thrown on your Timberlands. The 90s made these the symbol of hip hop. You had to wear them if you were rocking out on stage. Most people paired them with grunge pants and a button-down shirt or old t-shirt.
Combat boots
Combat boots were just as cool as Timberlands. Doc Martens were expensive and durable. You could find these boots in any print or color on the market. If you wanted crushed velvet, you could find them in combat boots.
Penny loafers
Penny loafers made everyone feel like the best jock on campus. Throw in an actual penny, and you were set in these shoes. The classic brown styles of the penny loafers never really went out of style. YOu just needed to add a chunky platform and a buckle in the 90s.
Slap bracelets
Slap bracelets were the weirdest little jewelry pieces to slap on your arm. They were more like a ruler wrapped around your wrist. Some schools actually banned them.
Wide jeans
You didn’t need to pull down your jeans to wear these cool, super-wide jeans. The 2000s brought skinny jeans, so these were the total opposite. JNCO provided the widest of the wide legs of jeans.
It’s true some of these trends are making a comeback. Some are a little weird, yet teens still rock them. The rules are to never throw anything out because it always come back in style.
