There are a lot of companies that dislike hiring Americans. Companies see American workers as opportunistic. Common advice from an advisor is to move frequently for better pay after gaining experience. Job hopping is the exact mindset of a mercenary employee.
Do high turnover rates look good?
Many move to a higher paying job on the advice of an online advisor. Think about how job jumping looks to employers. These online advisors in places like YouTube are probably self-employed. If they do YouTube professionally, then they do not know about holding a job. They have probably never taken their mercenary advice.
A postdoctoral position means that they hire an employee temporarily. Most of these are about a year. They can extend contracts for good workers. An experienced advisor will tell an employee they should take a contract extension. Business and science firms like steady workers, and it will reflect well.
Can being a mercenary hurt?
Companies will notice that an employee can’t stay at a job for more than a few months. Job hopping is okay if it happens now and then. If the employee leaves a high-paying job quickly, it tells both firms they are resume-boosting. That will never sell the employee to any employer.
No forward momentum
A mercenary employee may change jobs to try different fields. These employees don’t realize a career path will earn them the experience to make more money. Pay increases are great, but not all pay increases come with a promotion. In fact, many promotions require employees to put in time too. Why would a firm hire an employee that has no passion for the industry?
Is a new job beneficial?
If abuse is happening around the company, employees should speak up. The more employees that voice their concern means the better chance of the issue being resolved. If they ignore the issue and the abuse continues, it could be time to find a new company.
Lack of leadership
Leaders come in all forms, including calming, strong and authoritative. Different positions require different skills. An example would be a Marine failing to get an office to meet a deadline. Therefore, the company needs employees with different skills.
Promotion unavailable
Most companies don’t hand out promotions often, and this is especially true for smaller companies. If an employee shows leadership and work ethic, promotions could open up. An employee who innovates part of the company could get more attention. If a company praises an employee but denies them a promotion, they should think about leaving.
Need more experience
To move up, the employee could need more experience. There is only so much to learn in the same position. An employee should be creative and try to innovate their job to help the company. If the company ignores their efforts, it may be time to get experience elsewhere.
Bottom line
Job hopping may sound like a good way to find the best-paying jobs, but high paying companies hate unreliable employees. Even if they are the best for the position, they could easily overlook them. There are benefits to switching jobs, but it should not be a routine.
